Handmaid’s Tale Cast: Every Main Actor and Character From Seasons 1–6 | Complete Handmaid’s Tale Cast Guide

If you are looking for the handmaid’s tale cast, the essential names are Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne, Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford, Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia, O-T Fagbenle as Luke Bankole, Max Minghella as Nick Blaine, Samira Wiley as Moira Strand, Madeline Brewer as Janine Lindo, Bradley Whitford as Commander Lawrence, Amanda Brugel as Rita, Sam Jaeger as Mark Tuello, and Ever Carradine as Naomi. The Hulu drama concluded with its sixth and final season in 2025, bringing the long-running ensemble together for the final chapter of June’s fight against Gilead. Hulu’s official season 6 materials list Moss, Strahovski, Whitford, Minghella, Dowd, Fagbenle, Wiley, Brewer, Brugel, Jaeger, Carradine, and Josh Charles among the season’s cast.

The Handmaid’s Tale cast guide is especially useful for readers who want to distinguish the original household characters from later resistance figures. Because the ensemble spans several seasons and story locations, the most useful approach is to separate the central performers from the later additions.

The Handmaid’s Tale cast at a glance

The easiest way to understand the Handmaid’s Tale cast is to connect each performer with the character’s role in June’s story. The table below focuses on the principal ensemble and several characters who became especially important as the series expanded beyond the Waterford household.

Actor	Character	Role in the story
Elisabeth Moss	June Osborne / Offred	Central protagonist, mother, survivor, and resistance figure
Yvonne Strahovski	Serena Joy Waterford	Former Wife of Fred Waterford and an influential figure in Gilead
Ann Dowd	Aunt Lydia Clements	Aunt responsible for training and disciplining Handmaids
O-T Fagbenle	Luke Bankole	June’s husband and Hannah’s father
Max Minghella	Nick Blaine	Gilead insider, Commander, and June’s partner
Samira Wiley	Moira Strand	June’s closest friend and a survivor living in Canada
Madeline Brewer	Janine Lindo	Handmaid whose story becomes closely linked with June’s
Bradley Whitford	Commander Joseph Lawrence	Gilead architect whose motives and loyalties are complicated
Amanda Brugel	Rita Blue	Martha formerly assigned to the Waterford household
Sam Jaeger	Mark Tuello	U.S. government representative working against Gilead
Ever Carradine	Naomi Putnam / Naomi Lawrence	Wife whose relationship with Gilead and motherhood changes over the series
Josh Charles	Commander Gabriel Wharton	High Commander introduced in the final season

Hulu’s official season 6 cast listing confirms the core final-season ensemble, while the show’s character records identify the roles played by the principal and recurring performers.

The Handmaid’s Tale cast also works because the actors remain closely tied to character arcs rather than appearing only as plot devices. Several performers change status over time, moving from recurring roles to the principal ensemble.

Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne

Elisabeth Moss is the central name in The Handmaid’s Tale cast because June Osborne is the character through whom the audience experiences most of Gilead’s transformation of ordinary life into a system of control. Before Gilead, June is a writer and editor, a wife, and a mother. After the regime takes power, she is separated from Luke and her daughter Hannah and is classified as a Handmaid because she is fertile.

June is assigned to the Waterford household and given the name Offred, a patronymic identity indicating that she belongs to Commander Fred Waterford. The loss of her name becomes one of the clearest symbols of Gilead’s attempt to erase individual identity.

Across six seasons, June develops from someone primarily trying to survive into someone willing to take major risks for other women and children. Her story moves through the Waterford home, Mayday, escapes and returns, Canada, and the wider resistance. She also becomes increasingly willing to make morally difficult decisions.

Moss’s performance is central to the show’s emotional range, but June’s importance is also structural: nearly every major storyline involving Gilead eventually intersects with her. Hulu describes June as the show’s fiercely determined protagonist and notes that Moss also served as an executive producer and director.

Among the Handmaid’s Tale cast, Moss has the strongest connection to nearly every major storyline. For viewers tracking the Handmaid’s Tale cast, June’s key relationships include Luke, Hannah, Nichole, Serena, Nick, Moira, Janine, Rita, and Aunt Lydia. Each relationship reveals a different part of June’s personality: love, grief, loyalty, anger, compromise, or resistance.

Yvonne Strahovski as Serena Joy Waterford

Yvonne Strahovski plays Serena Joy Waterford, one of the most complex characters in The Handmaid’s Tale cast. Serena begins the series as Fred Waterford’s Wife and as a woman who helped promote the ideology that preceded Gilead. Once the regime is established, however, the system limits Serena’s own freedom as a woman.

That contradiction drives much of her character arc. Serena has status inside Gilead, but she does not have the unrestricted power she once imagined. She is denied many forms of intellectual and political independence, even while benefiting from the hierarchy imposed on other women.

Her relationship with June is particularly important. Serena can be cruel and controlling, yet the two women are repeatedly forced into situations where their interests overlap. Their relationship shifts between hostility, dependence, manipulation, motherhood, and reluctant cooperation.

Strahovski’s performance gives the Handmaid’s Tale cast a character who cannot be reduced to either victim or villain. Serena helped create the ideology that harmed June, but she also discovers that the system she supported can turn against her. Hulu describes Serena as one of Gilead’s influential founding figures who must confront the consequences of the world she helped build.

The Handmaid’s Tale cast around Serena is deliberately built to show how power can coexist with vulnerability. Her later storyline also becomes important to the final season because her relationship with Gilead’s leadership changes significantly.

Ann Dowd as Aunt Lydia

Ann Dowd portrays Aunt Lydia Clements, the authority figure most closely associated with the institutional training and punishment of Handmaids. In The Handmaid’s Tale cast, Lydia represents a particularly disturbing form of power: a woman given authority to enforce a system that restricts other women.

Lydia teaches Handmaids the language and rules of Gilead and uses punishment, fear, shame, and religious rhetoric to demand obedience. Her scenes with June, Janine, Emily, and other Handmaids show how Gilead turns abuse into an organized institution.

The character becomes more complicated as the series progresses. Lydia develops genuine attachments to some of the women she supervises, especially Janine, and increasingly questions the conduct of Commanders and the consequences of Gilead’s policies.

That tension makes Lydia more than a conventional antagonist. She is both a participant in the system and someone who gradually recognizes its failures. Dowd’s performance is one of the defining elements of The Handmaid’s Tale cast, and the character’s importance extends into Margaret Atwood’s later Gilead story, The Testaments.

That makes Dowd’s work a major reason the Handmaid’s Tale cast remains compelling even when the story moves away from the original household.

The men at the center of June’s story

The male side of The Handmaid’s Tale cast represents several paths through Gilead: direct power, compromised survival, resistance from exile, and political opportunism. Their relationships with June also give the series different perspectives on loyalty and power.

O-T Fagbenle as Luke Bankole

O-T Fagbenle plays Luke Bankole, June’s husband and Hannah’s father. Luke escapes to Canada while June and Hannah remain trapped, creating one of the series’ most painful contrasts: Luke is physically safe, but the people he loves are not.

Luke is therefore an important part of The Handmaid’s Tale cast even when June is physically separated from him. His role grows beyond that of a waiting husband. In Canada, Luke becomes involved with refugee and resistance efforts and helps care for Nichole. He must also deal with the psychological distance created by June’s experiences.

The couple’s reunion does not simply restore their old relationship. June has survived violence and made decisions that Luke cannot always understand, while Luke has built a life around waiting and trying to help from outside Gilead. Their disagreements become part of the show’s broader question about what resistance should look like.

In season 6, Hulu describes Luke and Moira as joining the resistance while June continues her fight against Gilead.

Max Minghella as Nick Blaine

Max Minghella plays Nick Blaine, who begins as a driver connected to the Waterford household and develops into one of the most important figures in the Handmaid’s Tale cast. Nick’s relationship with June becomes both romantic and political.

Nick helps June at critical moments, but he is never simply an outsider fighting against Gilead. He advances within the regime and accepts positions that place him inside its power structure. That makes his loyalty difficult to judge and keeps his relationship with June morally complicated.

Nick is also Nichole’s biological father. His choices therefore affect not only June but also the future of their child and the people around them.

By the final season, Nick’s position inside Gilead becomes even more consequential. Hulu specifically identifies Nick as a character facing challenging tests of character in season 6.

Nick’s ambiguity is one of the defining tensions within the Handmaid’s Tale cast. His character is especially useful for understanding why the series does not divide every person into simple heroes and villains.

Joseph Fiennes as Commander Fred Waterford

Joseph Fiennes plays Commander Fred Waterford, Serena’s husband and June’s first Commander. Fred is a central figure in the early Handmaid’s Tale cast because the Waterford household is where viewers first see many of Gilead’s rules operating on a personal level.

Fred holds institutional power while presenting himself as respectable and reasonable. That contrast is essential to the character: his violence and exploitation are often hidden behind ceremony, bureaucracy, and religious language.

His relationship with June demonstrates the unequal power structure of the Handmaid system, while his relationship with Serena exposes the contradictions within Gilead’s gender hierarchy.

Fiennes remained a major cast member through season 4. Fred’s death changes the direction of both June’s and Serena’s stories, removing the man around whom much of their early conflict was organized.

Fred’s presence in the early Handmaid’s Tale cast also establishes the personal face of Gilead’s institutional power.

Bradley Whitford as Commander Joseph Lawrence

Bradley Whitford plays Commander Joseph Lawrence, a major addition to The Handmaid’s Tale cast after the first season. Lawrence is an architect of Gilead’s economic system and one of the show’s most intellectually complicated Commanders.

Unlike Fred, Lawrence does not appear to believe blindly in every part of Gilead. He understands its contradictions and sometimes helps June and other resistance figures. At the same time, he helped build the system and continues to benefit from its power.

That contradiction is the key to his character. Lawrence can be useful to the resistance without becoming a conventional hero. His calculations are shaped by guilt, self-interest, political strategy, and a desire to control what happens next.

In the final season, Hulu places Lawrence alongside June and Aunt Lydia as one of the people confronting the consequences of what Gilead has become.

Lawrence gives The Handmaid’s Tale cast a character who can influence events without fitting neatly into the hero or villain category.

Samira Wiley as Moira Strand

Samira Wiley plays Moira Strand, June’s closest friend and one of the strongest recurring allies in The Handmaid’s Tale cast. Before Gilead, Moira and June share a close friendship. Under the regime, their paths diverge, but their bond remains important.

Moira’s escape to Canada allows the series to explore a different form of survival. She becomes involved in supporting refugees and survivors rather than remaining physically trapped in Gilead.

Her friendship with June is valuable because Moira remembers June before the regime. She understands the person June was while also recognizing how trauma and resistance have changed her.

In season 6, Hulu says Moira joins Luke in the resistance, reinforcing her importance to the final stage of the story.

Moira gives The Handmaid’s Tale cast a perspective that exists outside the daily routines of Gilead.

Madeline Brewer as Janine Lindo

Madeline Brewer plays Janine Lindo, a Handmaid whose story becomes one of the most emotional threads in The Handmaid’s Tale cast. Janine suffers severe punishment early in the series, including the loss of an eye, yet she continues to search for affection, safety, and hope.

Her friendship with June changes over time. At first, both women are simply trying to survive. Later, their relationship becomes a source of loyalty and mutual protection.

Janine’s story also demonstrates how Gilead can manipulate vulnerability. Her desire for love and family is repeatedly used against her, but those same qualities also help her maintain a sense of humanity.

Her final-season storyline gives the character an important emotional resolution. Hulu’s season 6 guide notes that Janine ultimately reunites with her daughter Charlotte in liberated Massachusetts, with help from Aunt Lydia and Naomi.

Janine’s resilience makes her one of the most recognizable emotional figures in The Handmaid’s Tale cast.

Amanda Brugel as Rita Blue

Amanda Brugel portrays Rita Blue, a Martha who works in the Waterford household. Rita is an important part of The Handmaid’s Tale cast because her position offers a different perspective on Gilead’s domestic hierarchy.

Marthas are responsible for household work, and Rita has access to information that can be valuable to both Commanders and resistance members. She is not a Handmaid, but she is still controlled by Gilead.

After reaching Canada, Rita has to adjust to a life in which she can make choices for herself. Her story is less about escaping one dramatic moment and more about rebuilding an identity after years of forced service.

Rita becomes especially valuable to June because she combines practical knowledge, emotional steadiness, and firsthand knowledge of the Waterford household.

Rita’s evolution helps The Handmaid’s Tale cast explore what freedom can look like after prolonged coercion.

Sam Jaeger as Mark Tuello

Sam Jaeger plays Mark Tuello, a representative of the U.S. government working from outside Gilead. He becomes an important part of the Handmaid’s Tale cast as the series expands its focus from individual survival to international politics and resistance.

Tuello is particularly connected to Serena. He recognizes that her knowledge of Gilead can be politically useful while also understanding that she cannot automatically be trusted.

His storyline adds a diplomatic dimension to the show. June’s resistance is personal and direct; Tuello’s work is tied to intelligence, negotiations, government strategy, and the broader effort to weaken Gilead.

Tuello adds a government and intelligence perspective to the handmaid’s tale cast.

Alexis Bledel as Emily Malek

Alexis Bledel plays Emily Malek, also known as Ofglen during part of her time as a Handmaid. Emily is a former university professor whose sexuality and resistance make her a target of Gilead.

Emily’s storyline demonstrates the regime’s attempt to punish anyone who does not fit its prescribed social order. Her friendship with June and other Handmaids also makes her part of the early resistance network.

Bledel was a main cast member through season 4 and later returned as Emily in a special-guest capacity for season 6. Her return gives the final season a link to one of the show’s earliest resistance stories.

Emily’s return is especially meaningful for viewers who have followed the Handmaid’s Tale cast from its earliest resistance stories.

Ever Carradine as Naomi Putnam / Naomi Lawrence

Ever Carradine plays Naomi Putnam, later Naomi Lawrence, a Wife whose story becomes more prominent as the series progresses. Naomi is connected to Gilead’s elite but is not simply a copy of Serena.

Her relationship with motherhood is central to her character. She is associated with Angela, also known as Charlotte, and her choices reveal how the system’s reproductive hierarchy affects Wives as well as Handmaids.

By the final season, Naomi’s role becomes more closely connected to Lawrence and to Janine’s storyline. That development makes Carradine an increasingly important part of the later handmaid’s tale cast.

Naomi’s later development adds another layer to The Handmaid’s Tale cast by showing how elite women negotiate a changing Gilead.

Josh Charles as Commander Gabriel Wharton

Josh Charles joins the final-season ensemble as Commander Gabriel Wharton, a High Commander whose position places him close to Gilead’s upper political structure. Hulu lists Charles in the season 6 cast, while character records identify Wharton as Nick’s father-in-law.

Wharton’s presence helps the final season widen its focus beyond the old Waterford power structure. His storyline connects Serena, Nick, and the political leadership of Gilead.

Because season 6 is the concluding chapter, new Commanders such as Wharton are not simply replacements for earlier villains. They show how the system continues to function even as familiar characters lose power.

For a complete handmaid’s tale cast guide, the final-season additions are important because they help explain the show’s closing political conflict.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 6 cast and new faces

The Handmaid’s Tale cast changes in noticeable ways during the sixth and final season. Hulu’s official materials list the returning principal ensemble and identify Josh Charles among the season 6 cast. Hulu’s talent and guest-cast pages also list D’Arcy Carden, Timothy Simons, and Athena Karkanis among the final-season performers.

Notable final-season additions and roles include:

• Josh Charles as Commander Gabriel Wharton
• Timothy Simons as Commander Bell
• D’Arcy Carden as Aunt Phoebe
• Athena Karkanis as Ellen

These characters support the season’s shift toward organized resistance, Gilead’s political leadership, and the struggle over what comes after the regime.

Season 6 is not just a reunion of the original handmaid’s tale cast. It uses the remaining ensemble to close long-running character arcs while introducing people who represent the next stage of the conflict.

The season 6 handmaid’s tale cast reflects the show’s move from household drama toward organized rebellion. The final-season ensemble also demonstrates how the series can introduce new political figures without abandoning its established characters.

How the Handmaid’s Tale cast changed from season 1 to season 6

One reason the Handmaid’s Tale cast feels much larger by the end is that the story expands geographically and politically. Season 1 is heavily centered on June’s life in the Waterford home. Later seasons move between Gilead, Canada, resistance networks, and the U.S. government in exile.

Several cast changes are especially important:

• Joseph Fiennes’ Fred Waterford leaves the story after season 4.
• Alexis Bledel’s Emily stops being a regular after season 4 and later returns for season 6.
• Bradley Whitford’s Lawrence grows from a recurring character into a principal member of the ensemble.
• Amanda Brugel’s Rita moves from recurring status to the main cast.
• Sam Jaeger’s Mark Tuello becomes increasingly important to the political storyline.
• Ever Carradine’s Naomi becomes more prominent in the later seasons.
• Josh Charles, Timothy Simons, D’Arcy Carden, and Athena Karkanis add new perspectives during the final season.

These changes reflect the show’s evolution. The Handmaid’s Tale cast is not static because the series itself is not static: its focus grows from one household to a conflict involving an entire political system.

Comparing the Handmaid’s Tale cast across all six seasons also highlights which characters stayed central and which became part of the wider story. The final season gives the Handmaid’s Tale cast a chance to resolve relationships that began in the first season.

What happened to the main characters in season 6?

The final season gives several major members of the handmaid’s tale cast decisive endings. June remains committed to freeing the girls still trapped in Gilead. Luke and June separate over how best to continue the fight, although they remain committed to finding Hannah. Janine is freed and reunites with Charlotte, while Serena and her son Noah end up in a refugee camp.

The finale does not present Gilead as completely erased. Instead, the rebellion continues after Massachusetts is liberated, and June returns to the former Waterford home to begin writing about what happened to her. Hulu confirms that season 6 is the final season and that the finale leaves June’s wider fight unresolved because Gilead still controls much of the country.

That ending matters for The Handmaid’s Tale cast because the series closes not with a simple victory, but with characters choosing what they will do next. Their individual stories become part of a larger struggle that can continue beyond the original series.

The Handmaid’s Tale cast remains the clearest way to see how the series’ focus changes from season to season. Taken together, The Handmaid’s Tale cast functions as a map of Gilead itself, from the household level to the political leadership and resistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Final look at The Handmaid’s Tale cast

The Handmaid’s Tale cast is one of the biggest reasons the series works as more than a single-character dystopian drama. Elisabeth Moss anchors the story as June, while Yvonne Strahovski, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley, Madeline Brewer, Bradley Whitford, Amanda Brugel, Sam Jaeger, Ever Carradine, and the wider ensemble give Gilead a constantly changing human dimension.

The sixth season closes the television series after six seasons, but the characters’ conflicts are deliberately larger than one ending. June’s resistance, Serena’s reckoning, Lydia’s transformation, Janine’s survival, Luke and Moira’s continued work, and the political struggle surrounding Gilead all contribute to the show’s final shape.

For anyone searching the Handmaid’s Tale cast by actor, character, or season, the key point is that the ensemble evolved alongside the story. Some characters disappeared, some became more important, and new figures entered the final conflict. Together, they made The Handmaid’s Tale a long-form character drama about survival, power, identity, motherhood, and resistance.
