Finding the best mattress for back and hip pain isn’t simply about choosing the softest or firmest bed. A good mattress should provide enough support to keep your spine in a comfortable position while cushioning pressure-sensitive areas such as the hips and shoulders.
For most shoppers, a supportive hybrid mattress with the right firmness for their sleeping position and body type is a strong starting point. However, the ideal choice varies from person to person.
We’ve compared current expert-tested options based on support, pressure relief, firmness, sleeping position, construction, and value to help you narrow down the choices.
Quick answer: The WinkBed is our best overall pick for back and hip pain because it offers multiple firmness choices and a zoned support system. The WinkBed is our top overall choice because it gives shoppers something particularly valuable when dealing with back or hip discomfort: choice.
The mattress is available in multiple firmness configurations, making it easier to match the bed to different sleeping positions and body types. Its zoned coil system is also designed to provide targeted support through the middle of the mattress.
Sleep Foundation currently ranks WinkBed as its top mattress for back pain after testing more than 2,000 mattresses. Its testing notes that the zoned coil system can be particularly useful for sleepers dealing with lower-back or hip discomfort.
Pros
- Multiple firmness choices
- Zoned support
- Strong edge support

2. Helix Midnight Luxe — Best for Side Sleepers
Best for: Side sleepers with hip and shoulder pressure
Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Medium
Why we picked it: Balanced cushioning and support
Side sleepers put considerable pressure on the hips and shoulders. A mattress that’s too firm may create uncomfortable pressure points, while one that’s too soft can allow the midsection to sink excessively.
The Helix Midnight Luxe takes a middle-ground approach with a supportive hybrid construction and cushioning designed around the needs of side sleepers.
Saatva’s comparison of the Classic and Midnight Luxe notes that the Helix model is designed to cradle the body and relieve pressure around the shoulders and hips.
Pros
- Strong pressure relief
- Good option for side sleepers
- Hybrid construction
- Balanced support and cushioning
- Good motion isolation
Cons
- Premium price
- May not be firm enough for some stomach sleepers
Best for
If your main concern is hip pressure while sleeping on your side, this should be one of the first mattresses you consider.
3. Saatva Classic — Best Premium Mattress for Support
Best for: Back sleepers, combination sleepers, and premium shoppers
Type: Innerspring hybrid

Why we picked it: Strong support with customizable comfort
The Saatva Classic is one of the strongest premium options for shoppers who want a traditional mattress feel rather than the deep sinking sensation associated with some memory foam beds.
Its construction includes individually wrapped coils and Saatva’s Lumbar Zone support system. The company says the system is designed to promote spinal alignment and provide additional support through the center of the mattress.
Independent testing also continues to rate the Saatva Classic highly for support and back-pain considerations in 2026.

4. Saatva Rx — Best for Back and Joint Support
Best for: Sleepers who prioritize pressure relief and specialized support
Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Supportive Plush
Why we picked it: Pressure-relieving design with targeted support
The Saatva Rx is specifically positioned by Saatva as a mattress for sleepers with back and joint concerns. Its construction combines foam, micro-coils, and an 8-inch comfort coil unit.
Saatva describes the mattress as having a supportive plush feel and specifically markets it toward side, back, and combination sleepers, including people with chronic back and joint conditions.
That said, marketing language shouldn’t be treated as proof that a mattress treats a medical condition. The value here is its construction and pressure-relief characteristics, not a promise of medical treatment.
Pros
- Pressure-focused construction
- Supportive hybrid design
- Good cushioning
- Suitable for side and back sleepers
Cons
- Expensive
- Softer feel may not suit people who prefer very firm mattresses
Best for
Consider the Saatva Rx if pressure relief is more important to you than an extra-firm feel.

| A combination sleeper | WinkBed |

What Type of Mattress Is Best for Back and Hip Pain?
There isn’t one mattress material that’s automatically best for everyone. The right construction depends on how much cushioning and support you need.
Hybrid Mattresses
Best overall starting point for many sleepers
Hybrids combine foam or other comfort materials with coils.
Advantages
- Good support
- Pressure relief
- Better airflow than many all-foam beds
- Easier movement
- Strong edge support
For shoppers dealing with both back and hip discomfort, a hybrid can offer a useful middle ground between cushioning and support.
Memory Foam Mattresses
Best for pressure relief
Memory foam contours closely to the body and can reduce pressure around the hips and shoulders.
It may work especially well for side sleepers who prefer a hugging sensation.
However, some people find traditional memory foam too warm or difficult to move around on.
Latex Mattresses
Best for responsive support
Latex tends to feel more buoyant than memory foam.
It’s a good option if you want pressure relief but don’t like sinking deeply into your mattress.
What Mattress Firmness Is Best for Back and Hip Pain?
There is no single firmness level that works for everyone.
A person’s sleeping position, body weight, and personal comfort preference all matter.
Side sleepers
A softer-to-medium feel can provide more cushioning around the hips and shoulders.
Back sleepers
Medium to medium-firm mattresses often provide a useful balance of cushioning and support.
Stomach sleepers
A firmer surface may help prevent the hips and abdomen from sinking too deeply.
Combination sleepers
A medium or medium-firm mattress can provide a useful balance between support and ease of movement.
The important point is that firmer does not automatically mean better for back pain. Your body should feel supported without excessive pressure at the hips or shoulders.
Best Mattress for Back and Hip Pain by Sleeping Position
Best for Side Sleepers
Side sleepers should prioritize:
- Hip pressure relief
- Shoulder cushioning
- Adequate support through the waist
- A surface that isn’t excessively firm
Top pick: Helix Midnight Luxe.
Best for Back Sleepers
Back sleepers should look for:
- Consistent support
- Moderate cushioning
- Lumbar support
- A mattress that prevents excessive sinking
Top picks: WinkBed and Saatva Classic.
Best for Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers generally need enough support to prevent their midsection from sinking too deeply.
Look for:
- Firmer support
- Stronger coil systems
- Good edge support
- Less deep contouring
Consider: WinkBed’s firmer configurations or another supportive firm hybrid.
Best for Combination Sleepers
Combination sleepers change positions throughout the night, so excessive sinking can become frustrating.
Look for:
- Responsive materials
- Moderate firmness
- Easy movement
- Balanced pressure relief
Top pick: WinkBed.
How to Choose the Best Mattress for Back and Hip Pai
Before buying, work through these factors.
1. Start With Your Sleeping Position
Your sleeping position determines where pressure is concentrated.
Side sleepers generally need more hip and shoulder cushioning, while stomach sleepers typically need more surface support.
2. Consider Your Body Weight
The same mattress can feel dramatically different to two people.
A lighter sleeper may experience a mattress as firmer, while a heavier sleeper may sink further into the comfort layers.
3. Look for Balanced Support
Support doesn’t mean simply buying the hardest mattress.
You want enough resistance to keep your body from sinking excessively while still allowing the mattress to cushion pressure points.
4. Pay Attention to Zoned Support
Zoned support can provide different levels of resistance across different parts of the mattress.
This can be useful when you want more support around the center of the body and more cushioning around the shoulders and hips.
5. Check the Sleep Trial
A mattress can feel completely different after several nights compared with a five-minute showroom test.
A generous at-home trial gives you more time to determine whether the mattress works for your body.
6. Check the Return Policy
Don’t assume every “sleep trial” means a completely free return.
Check:
- Minimum trial period
- Return fees
- Pickup requirements
- Refund conditions
- Exchange policies
7. Consider Temperature
If you regularly wake up feeling hot, look for breathable coils, cooling covers, latex, or other temperature-management features.
Mattress Buying Mistakes to Avoid
Buying the Firmest Mattress You Can Find
Extra-firm isn’t automatically better.
A mattress can provide strong support while still offering enough cushioning for pressure-sensitive areas.
Choosing Softness Without Considering Support
A very soft mattress may initially feel comfortable but can allow excessive sinking for some sleepers.
Ignoring Your Sleeping Position
Your ideal mattress firmness can change significantly depending on whether you sleep on your side, back, stomach, or a combination.
Buying Based Only on Price
The cheapest mattress isn’t necessarily the best value.
Consider durability, warranty, trial period, construction, and expected lifespan.
Ignoring the Return Policy
Always read the actual return conditions before buying.
Trusting the Word “Orthopedic” Automatically
“Orthopedic” is often used as a marketing term. Instead of relying on the label, examine the mattress’s construction, firmness, support system, and pressure-relief characteristics.
Can a Mattress Actually Help With Back and Hip Pain?
A mattress can affect comfort and sleep quality, and the wrong mattress may contribute to uncomfortable pressure or poor sleeping posture.
But a mattress should not be considered a treatment for an underlying medical condition.
If pain is persistent, severe, worsening, or accompanied by other concerning symptoms, it’s better to speak with an appropriate healthcare professional rather than relying on a mattress change alone.
How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress?
There isn’t a universal replacement date.
The right time depends on:
- Mattress construction
- Material quality
- Usage
- Body weight
- Visible sagging
- Changes in comfort
- Changes in your sleeping needs
If your mattress is visibly sagging, causing pressure points, or no longer feels supportive, it’s worth evaluating whether replacement is appropriate.
